I listen to music for the aesthetics/atmosphere. If that's attractive enough, I'll spin it again a few times and eventually soak up some of the lyrical phrases and figure out what the writer is getting at. Though, it's easy to figure out what Mr. Cooder is getting at here. It's a historical album about a people, time, and place. (b/c of this I associate it with Randy Newman's Good Old Boys.)

"I work at Mike's parking cars. Underneath the moon and stars. Same ones that we all knew back all knew. Back in 1952."

One of the many lines on this album that makes me nostalgic...for a time that I've never personally known.

It's a concept album, but the diversions still sound good even if it's not readily understood what they're about. e.g., "Soy Luz y Sombra"...no idea what the song means, but I don't care. It sounds transcendental. A great closer.

Ry Cooder is somewhat of an anomaly. Most of the musical artists I admire most had their heyday in the 70's. Then, in the 80's, some sytnth/reverb shit happened that seemed to ruin everything irreparably. Only a few came out unscathed. Cooder seems to be one of the few. This decade, he's making his most vital music ever, I feel. I still haven't finished 'The Trilogy' (Flathead evades me for some reason), but RAVINE and BUDDY are so fantastic that I can barely stand it. The man needs more attention for what he's doing these days.

I'm semi-obsessed with the Veedon Fleece lately, and I know that your an advocate of that album (through last.fm). I don't want to force the issue, but I'd enjoy a review of that album.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10021634081291194285noreply@blogger.com
